After a 14 months, 96 hours on the Dhaka- Dinajpur night bus, 63,000 cups of tea and a lot of bamboo we have finished the houses in the slum up in Dinajpur. 10 houses – quite modest affairs on the outside but packed with innovation to make them last a long time, aimed at demonstrating the ideas to the rest of the community in the hope they may be copied.
We ended with lots of singing and dancing – a big traditional play (with a housing theme of course) on a bamboo stage in the middle of the slum. Builders for actors, lots of terrible singing and some stellar dancing performances from the kids. We even ended up in the national papers.
The houses look great. They cost about £420 quid each. And we are reasonable sure they are not going to fall over when it gets windy, are’t we…
