‘Building For Safety’ Workshop – Sundarban Village

Today, SAFE held a ‘Building for Safety’ workshop with 20 participants from the local village. The one-day event began with a performance from the song team and welcome address by staff and guests.

Improved construction techniques were promoted through model demonstrations, visual aids, hands-on activities and financial exercises. SAFE believes in ‘learning through doing’ and therefore encourages participation of all members throughout the workshop.

The workshop focused on the use of bamboo and earth within construction. Discussion items included bamboo treatment for protection against insects and water (open tank method), bamboo connections, bamboo cross-bracing, bamboo cost analysis (typical construction costs and longevity vs improved construction), cement-mud block production and stabilising earthen plasters.

The event concluded with a skype conference to a construction workshop in the UK in order to share thoughts. After a day’s hard work, a wonderful lamb curry was shared by the group.
