Rana Bamboo House – Construction Complete

Every September SAFE undertakes an international workshop with Housing and Hazards. This year 19 participants, from as far afield as Australia, travelled to Bangladesh to work with both the SAFE team and local builders to build a new house for a low-income family in Jorgen Babur Mart slum.

The double-storey construction was designed by architect Jo Ashbridge, a member of Engineers Without Borders, in collaboration with the Rana family. The bamboo structure, finished with a stabilised earth plaster features many of the improved techniques promoted by SAFE including t-shaped pad foundations, cross-bracing and treated bamboo. The house will act as a demonstration build within the community whilst offering the family increased space and an improved living environment.

The family have now officially moved in to their new house, creating a home with a kitchen garden at ground level and planting overhanging the veranda.
